PAUL MITCHELL WRIGHT is an actor, musician and mathematics professor. He grew up in Houston, Texas and began learning how to play the guitar around age 12 when he bought his first guitar from the proceeds of a house painting job. He learned to play by ear, listening to Beatles records and other English bands (The Who, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd). As a teenager he began to listen to the intricate harmonies of The Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, America, Buffalo Springfield, and of course more Beatles!
In his late teens and early 20's, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, B.W. Stevenson, Townes Van Zandt, Gordon Lightfoot, and David Rodriguez were all inspirational.
In the 1980's he began playing bass guitar with several bands. His previous credits as a musician include numerous studio sessions and live performances as a bassist for Richard Allen, Sara Hamman, Kevin Ahart, Billy Wolfe, Bill Thomas, 290 West, The Rock Hounds, Chaparral, Peggy Sue Wright, and others.
In his time playing with Jeff Hughes and Chaparral and Richard Allen, he was exposed to country and rockabilly artists such as Merle Haggard, Don Williams, Buddy Holly, Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Rodney Crowell, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubbs, Johnny Cash, Bob Wills, Marty Robbins, and a host of others.
While playing electric and upright bass with Kevin Ahart , https://www.kevinahart.com/, Paul was introduced to the jazz world, playing Kevin's original compositions and other jazz standards. Cole Porter became a favorite writer, as well as Johnny Mercer.
Then he met Billy Wolfe in the late 1990's and began to play and create original music that spanned the boundaries of jazz, latin jazz, fusion, and rock. He also played bass in several musicals during this time, his favorite among them, a Laura Nyro project directed by Shelby Brammer and performed in Austin, Texas. It was a special honor to play in the band with the late and great trumpet player, Martin Banks.
Paul has produced 3 CDs by pianist Billy Wolfe, arranged and produced a CD by Peggy Sue Wright and co-wrote songs on her CD. This is his first CD as a soloist and guitarist. All of the songs on Sand Between My Toes were written, arranged, and co-produced by Paul.
The CD was recorded at Loma Ranch Studios in Fredericksburg, Texas over a 4 year period. Engineered by John Hill and mixed and mastered by Fred Remmert. The songs were recorded live in the studio, in single takes, with no overdubs or vocal tuning, except for Sad House which includes a rain soundtrack. The songs are also presented on the CD in the order they were written over the four year period.
My personal favorite tracks are No Favors No Heartbreak, Love In a Box, Three Springs, Sand between My Toes, and one of the instrumentals, either Separation or Heartsails. The idea for the CD and its format came to me after Sand Between My Toes was born. In a nutshell, the CD describes the process of loss, traveling through the stages of grief (Sand Between My Toes), denial (No Favors, No Heartbreak), anger (Start All Over Again), separation (Separation), nostalgic longing (Saudade), reflection (Three Springs) and finally resolution and letting go, with the well-wishes in My Hope For You.

My second CD, Music For The Grapes of Wrath, is a collection of original music, modern arrangements of traditional folk music and hymns. It was written for a theatrical production of The Grapes of Wrath, directed by Shelby Brammer for Theatre Bartlesville in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The CD highlights performances by Danny Levin, Sadie Wolfe, Rich Brotherton, and other Austin musicians.
